“After going to Stress Free PT, I will not go back to the group PT environment again. Their hands-on 1-on-1 approach to getting you better I think is much more beneficial than the group setting style. I recently completed my treatment and couldn’t be happier with the results”

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about pelvic floor physical therapy? We’re here to help.

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized type of therapy that focuses on conditions affecting bowel, bladder, and sexual function. Pelvic floor physical therapists have advanced training to assess the pelvic floor muscles, nerves, and organs in the pelvis. At Bloom, we use a hybrid approach that combines hands-on manual therapies with proven progressive corrective exercises to achieve the best possible outcomes for you.

Do I need a referral to start pelvic floor physical therapy?

No, you do not need a referral for pelvic floor physical therapy. Massachusetts is a direct access state, which means you can schedule an appointment without a doctor’s referral. However, if you plan to seek insurance reimbursement, we recommend checking with your insurance provider about their requirements. We provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

Your first appointment includes a thorough review of your medical history, symptoms, and current lifestyle. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy will then perform a hands-on assessment looking at flexibility, strength, posture, breathing patterns, and other tests to determine what can be improved for more balanced health. Treatment will begin at your first appointment, and we’ll create a personalized plan together with goals that are important to you. You’ll leave with activities you can start immediately to reach your goals.

Are Kegels the right exercise for everyone?

No. While Kegels (pelvic floor contractions) are often recommended, they’re not the right exercise for everyone. Some women have very tight pelvic floor muscles that need help relaxing, while others have weak muscles that need strengthening. Some have typical muscle length but need to work on coordination. If you’re not doing what’s specifically needed for your body—based on a thorough assessment by a trained specialist—it can create pelvic floor dysfunction or make existing problems worse.

Why should I consider pelvic floor therapy if I'm pregnant?

Pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy can make your pregnancy and childbirth more comfortable, easier, and reduce the impact of pregnancy on your pelvic floor. It can also reduce your risk of prolapse, leakage, and pain postpartum. Any woman can benefit from pelvic floor wellness services, whether you’re preparing for childbirth or managing symptoms during pregnancy.

What conditions does Bloom Pelvic Health & Wellness treat?

We treat a wide variety of conditions including urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, painful intercourse, pelvic pain, endometriosis-related pain, pregnancy and postpartum concerns, diastasis recti, bowel dysfunction, and musculoskeletal pain in the pelvic region, low back, hips, or abdomen. Although many of these conditions are common, they are NOT normal—and you have options for treatment.
