 Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about pelvic floor therapy? We’ve got answers. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out — we’re always happy to help.

Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral is needed to begin pelvic floor physical therapy at Bloom. Massachusetts allows direct access to physical therapy care, so you can schedule your evaluation directly with us. If you require physical therapy services longer than 30 days, we’ll work with you to obtain a referral from your physician.

What happens during my first appointment?
Your first appointment is 75-90 minutes and includes a comprehensive review of your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle. We’ll perform a hands-on assessment of your flexibility, strength, posture, breathing pattern, and pelvic floor function. Treatment begins at your first visit, and you’ll leave with a personalized plan and activities you can start right away.

Do you accept insurance?
Bloom Pelvic Health & Wellness operates as an out-of-network practice. This model allows us to provide extended appointment times, personalized care, and unrestricted treatment approaches without insurance limitations. We’re happy to provide superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. We also believe in cost transparency and will provide a “Good Faith Estimate” upon request.

How long will I need therapy?
The length of care varies based on your goals, symptoms, and follow-through with your home program. Some patients see significant improvement in 4-6 weeks, while others may benefit from a longer treatment plan. We’ll discuss your expected timeline during your evaluation and adjust as needed throughout your recovery.

Is pelvic floor therapy only for women who have had babies?
No! While pregnancy and postpartum are common reasons to seek pelvic floor therapy, we treat women at all life stages — including those who have never been pregnant. Pelvic floor dysfunction can affect anyone, whether due to surgery, chronic pain, athletic activity, hormonal changes, or simply the need for preventative care and pelvic health education.

Are Kegels enough to fix my pelvic floor issues?
Not always. While Kegels (pelvic floor contractions) can be helpful for some people, they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. Some women have tight pelvic floor muscles that need to relax, while others need strengthening or coordination work. Without a proper assessment, doing the wrong exercises can actually make symptoms worse. That’s why individualized care from a pelvic floor specialist is so important.
